The Metals:
Gold rose as much as $5.85 to $1233.95 in Asia and then fell back off in London and New York to as low as $1216.45 by late morning before it rallied back higher in the last couple of hours of trade, but it still ended with a loss of 0.44%. Silver followed a very different pattern and rose to as high as $18.541 by about 9:35AM EST before it fell back off into the close, but it still ended with a gain of 0.66%.
Euro gold fell to about €999, platinum gained $28.05 to $1557.55, and copper rose 9 cents to about $2.99.
Gold and silver equities saw slight gains at the open, but they then fell back off for most of the rest of trade and ended with almost 2% losses.
The Economy:
There were no major economic reports today. Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings Import and Export Prices for May and June’s Empire Manufacturing Survey expected at 20.0. At 9AM is the Net Long-Term TIC Flows report for April.

Oil climbed back over $75 a barrel as the U.S. dollar index and treasuries fell on strong economic data in Europe that raised hopes for a global recovery and sent the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P modestly higher for most of the day, but another Moody’s downgrade of Greece’s debt late in the day took some air out of the euro and caused the major indices to close near unchanged.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Fannie, Freddie, SanDisk, Symantec, BP, and Cablevision.
