The miraculous feat of gaining 1,000,000 followers in 24 hours in Twitter is once again being challenged. Prior to today I know of only two other Twitter users that were able to accomplish this! Can you guess the two people that have done it?

The First Twitter User to One Million Followers in 24 Hours was the POTUS, Currently Barack Obama.

The @POTUS account is the business account of the “President of the United States”, so the account will change hands when the new POTUS is sworn in. The POTUS account was able to achieve the 1 Million follower mark on Twitter in 5 hours! Here is a little humor between President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton shortly after the launch of the new POTUS account.

The Second Fastest Account to 1 Million Followers on Twitter is None Other Than Ironman, Robert Downey Jr.

When Robert Downey Jr. @RobertDowneyJr launched his Twitter account he was able to reach 1,000,000 followers in 23 hours and 22 minutes! Boom, that is insanely fast for a personal account. That is called going viral. Maybe his Ironman character tapped into the Twitter systems and put his account in front of every raving fan on social media, including my wife @AnabellHilarski.

Now Who Might Be Ready To Join the One Million Follower Count on Twitter in 24 Hours?

Can you believe it is none other than Edward Snowden?! His account @Snowden is on a tear and is growing by thousands of users per minute. As a social media professional I am watching his growth on Twitter with wonder. As a fan of Edward Snowden I am jumping up and down cheering his success. This is ground breaking territory and makes be proud. Frankly the people are speaking loud and clear. The best part about the internet is that it is one of the last places on earth where you have free speech even though some of the larger platforms are trying to crush it.

How to Tie this Into Social Media?

It seems daily Anabell and I are working on our personal brands. Here Edward Snowden is clearly building his personal brand. For the last few years his personal brand has been at the mercy of media which we all know is heavily influenced by governments around the world. Now with the help of social media his voice will be heard as the Tweet above mentioned, “Can you hear me now?”

The masses will look at Edward Snowden joining social media as being provocative whether for or against what he stands for. I simply see it as a young man finding a place for his voice to be heard. The best part is that the foundation he builds now will hopefully be used to improve the lives of humans across the globe.

His business page on Twitter is @FreedomofPress. The account says, “Defending and supporting cutting-edge transparency journalism in the face of adversity.” Here is an article on The Intercept_ announcing Edward Snowden joining Twitter.

If you are a social media user remember that your personal brand is everything. You can take it everywhere you go and use it for both good and bad. Just remember to protect your personal brand at all costs. In the next 14 hours we will know whether or not he made it to 1,000,000 followers in 24 hours. My guess is that it will happen.
