The Metals:
Gold climbed to as high as $1556.84 by about 10AM EST before it fell back to almost unchanged at $1541.75 in the next hour of trade, but it then rallied back higher into the close and ended with a gain of 0.45%. Silver surged to as high as $36.916 before it fell back to $35.558 and then also bounced back higher in late trade, but it still ended with a loss of 2.22%.
Euro gold jumped to a new record high at almost €1104, platinum lost $9.30 to $1718.20, and copper fell 4 cents to about $4.36.
Gold and silver equities fell about 1.5% by midmorning and remained near that level for the rest of the day.

Oil fell as the U.S. dollar index rose on worries over debt contagion in Europe that sent the euro lower.
Treasuries rose as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P fell as much as 2% on concerns about a slowing global economy.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Nestle, Lonza, Bank of America Corp., Old Navy, Dunkin’, News Corp, and BSkyB.
