The Metals:

Gold waffled within 1% of unchanged throughout most of world trade and ultimately ended near its noontime low of $1641.42 with a loss of 0.4%.  Silver dropped to as low as $31.138 and ended with a loss of 2.04%.

Euro gold fell to about €1194, platinum lost $14.20 to $1516, and copper dropped 10 cents to about $3.25.

Gold and silver equities fell over throughout most of trade and ended with almost 6% losses.

The Economy:

The fed's Beige Book “said the economy maintained its expansion last month, even as companies reported more doubt about the strength of the recovery.”

Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings Initial Jobless Claims for 10/15 expected at 403,000 and at 10AM is the Existing Home Sales report for September expected at 4,920,000, the Philadelphia Fed for October expected at -8.8, and Leading Economic Indicators expected at 0.3%.

Oil turned slightly higher after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories fell 4.7 million barrels, gasoline inventories fell 3.3 million barrels, and distillates fell 4.3 million barrels, but it then fell back off in late trade and ended about 2.5% lower as the U.S. dollar index and treasuries erased early losses after the fed’s Beige Book did not indicate a need for any further stimulus.

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P fell on poor earnings reports and worries over Europe.

Among the big names making news in the market today were AMR, Apple, Groupon, Ford, Intel, Morgan Stanley, PNC, Abbott, TriplePoint, Audi, Google, and U.S. Bancorp.

Agnico-Eagle closes Quebec gold mine - "Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. said Wednesday that has halted operation at a gold mine in Quebec for safety reasons.

The Toronto-based miner said that its Goldex mine in Val d'Or was put on hold indefinitely after learning of structural failures that could endanger its crews.

Agnico-Eagle said it will write off its investment in the mine on its third-quarter financial statement. The value of the write-off is estimated at $170 million, or $1 per share. The company will release its quarterly results on Oct. 26." More
