The Metals:

 

Gold climbed up to $1676.74 in Asia, but it then fell back off in London and New York and ended with a loss of 0.35%.  Silver surged to as high as $31.241 in Asia before it also fell back off, but it still ended with a gain of 0.03%.

 

Euro gold fell to about €1331, platinum lost $7 to $1537.00, and copper fell slightly to about $3.48.

 

Gold and silver equities waffled near unchanged for most of the morning, but they then fell back off in afternoon trade and ended with over 1% losses.

 

The Economy:

 

There were no major economic reports today.  Tomorrow at 9AM EST brings the Case-Shiller 20-city Index for June expected at -0.3% and at 10AM is Consumer Confidence for August expected at 65.7.

 

The Markets:

Oil fell as the U.S. dollar index ended with a slight gain ahead of Bernanke’s Jackson Hole speech later this week.

 

Treasuries rose as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P fell in late trade and ended mixed on apprehension about what Bernanke may say.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were Ask.com and About.com, IBM and Kenexa, AOL, Hertz and Dollar Thrifty, Tiffany, Best Buy, Samsung, M&T and Hudson City, and Nokia, Microsoft, and Samsung.
