The Metals:
Gold fell $3.50 to $1771.60 in Asia before it edged up to $1781.65 in early New York trade and then chopped back lower at times, but it still ended with a gain of 0.19%. Silver climbed up to $34.848 in early New York trade, but it then fell back off in afternoon trade and ended with a loss of 0.06%.
Euro gold climbed to almost €1379, platinum rose $11 to $1686.50, and copper fell a couple of cents to about $3.78.
Gold and silver equities fell about 1.5% by midafternoon and remained near that level for the rest of the day.

Oil extended lower on persistent worries about demand.
The U.S. dollar index rose on better than expected economic data that sent treasuries lower and the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P modestly higher.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Hewlett-Packard, Best Buy, Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile, and Boeing.
