The Metals:
Gold climbed $15.40 to $1731.60 at about 5:30AM EST before it fell back to as low as $1703.11 in late morning New York trade, but it then rallied back higher in afternoon trade and ended with a gain of 0.12%. Silver slid to as low as $31.209 before it also rallied back higher in late trade, but it still ended with a loss of 0.56%.
Euro gold rose to about €1346, platinum lost $19.30 to $1534.20, and copper fell 6 cents to about $3.45.
Gold and silver equities traded mixed for most of the morning, but they then turned higher in afternoon trade and ended with about 1% gains.

Oil extended lower after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories rose 1.8 million barrels, gasoline inventories rose 2.9 million barrels, and distillates rose 100,000 barrels.
The U.S. dollar index and treasuries rose while the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P fell over 2% as focus returned to the Europe’s debt crisis and the looming fiscal cliff in the US.
