The Metals:
Gold edged up to $1735.50 in London before it fell back to as low as $1721.90 in early afternoon New York trade, but it then rallied back higher in the last two and a half hours of trade and ended with a loss of just 0.25%. Silver slipped to $32.86 in early afternoon New York trade, but it then rallied back higher into the close and ended with a gain of 0.12%.
Euro gold fell to about €1348, platinum lost $1.50 to $1571.50, and copper remained at about $3.53.
Gold and silver equities fell about 1% in the first hour of trade and remained near that level for the rest of the day.

Oil fell along with the yen as the U.S. dollar index rose after the Bank of Japan left its policy interest rate and the size of its asset-purchase program unchanged. Moody’s cut France’s credit rating to Aa1 from Aaa, but the announcement was largely shrugged off by the market.
Treasuries fell on better than expected economic data.
The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P waffled near unchanged on mixed company reports.
Among the big names making news in the market today were HP, Xstrata and Glencore, Green Mountain, Campbell, Best Buy, and Hostess.
