The Metals:
Gold climbed $9.88 to $1706.58 in Asia before it fell all the way back to $1684.75 at about 11AM EST, but it then bounced back higher in the next hour of trade and ended with a loss of just 0.18%. Silver rose to $33.24 before it slipped back to $32.51, but it then rallied back higher midday and ended with a loss of just 0.33%.
Euro gold fell to under €1295, platinum lost $6.50 to $1578, and copper climbed a couple of cents to about $3.67.
Gold and silver equities remained weak throughout the day and ended with about 3% losses.

Oil fell as the U.S. dollar index and treasuries rose on deadlocked budget talks in Washington.
The Dow and S&P climbed higher on decent economic data while the Nasdaq dropped on a disappointing performance by Apple.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Apple, MF Global, Disney, Wal-Mart, AT&T, J.C. Penney, Citigroup, and Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., Plains Exploration & Production Company, and McMoRan Exploration Co.
