The Metals:

 

Gold edged up to $1700.42 in Asia before it fell back to $1693.32 by a little after 9AM EST, but it then bounced back higher into the close and ended with a loss of just 0.17%.  Silver slipped to as low as $32.16 and ended with a loss of 1.17%.

 

Euro gold fell to about €1288, platinum gained $3.50 to $1613.50, and copper climbed a penny to about $3.66.

 

Gold and silver equities opened up about 1% higher before they fell to see about 1% losses in the next hour of trade, but they then rallied back higher in early afternoon trade and ended with modest gains.

Oil rose on stronger than expected economic data from China that raised demand expectations.

 

The U.S. dollar index fell on this morning’s CPI report that allows the Federal Reserve to stay on its ultra-easy monetary policy path.

 

Treasuries found slight gains as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P traded mostly slightly lower on the lack of progress over budget talks.

 

Among the big names making news in the market Friday were Discovery, UBS, Boeing, Bank of America and MBIA, Apple, and Best Buy.
