The Metals:
Gold fell $4.90 to $1668.10 at about 6AM EST, but it then climbed to as high as $1679.50 in New York and ended with a gain of 0.27%. Silver rose to as high as $31.873 and ended with a gain of 0.13%.
Euro gold climbed to almost €1241, platinum gained $27.70 to $1731.80, and copper fell a couple of cents to about $3.75.
Gold and silver equities traded mostly slightly higher and ended with modest gains.
The Economy:
U.S. mortgage applications up 16%: MBA MarketWatch
Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings Initial Jobless Claims for 2/02 expected at 360,000, fourth quarter Productivity expected at -1.2%, and Unit Labor Costs expected at 2.4%. At 3PM is Consumer Credit for December expected at $11.9 billion.

Oil pared early losses and ended just barely lower after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories rose 2.6 million barrels, gasoline inventories rose 1.7 million barrels, and distillates fell 1.0 million barrels.
The U.S. dollar index and treasuries rose on persistent worries about Europe’s debt crisis that held the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P near unchanged.
Among the big names making news in the market today were RBS, Time Warner, Biogen, Shutterfly, and Macy’s.
