The Metals:

 

Gold dropped $10.51 to $1639.19 by a little after 5AM EST, but it then rose to as high as $1653.30 in New York and ended with a gain of 0.11%.  Silver slipped to $30.57 in London, but it then climbed to as high as $31.128 and ended with a gain of 0.42%.

 

Euro gold fell to about €1228, platinum jumped $29.25 to $1715.50, and copper remained at about $3.72.

 

Gold and silver equities traded mostly slightly higher and ended with modest gains.

Oil rose and the U.S. dollar index fell as the yen jumped higher after a G-7 official said the group is concerned about excess moves in the currency.

 

Treasuries fell as the Dow and S&P traded mostly higher on decent earnings reports.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were Avon, Michael Kors, Barclays, Nasdaq, McGraw-Hill, Cnooc, Wal-Mart, and Apple.
