The Metals:

 

Gold chopped around in a tight range of $1595.00 to $1600.90 in lackluster post-holiday trade and ended with a gain of 0.06%.  Silver slipped to as low as $27.87 and ended with a loss of 1.44%.

 

Euro gold closed above €1244, platinum gained $24 to $1588, and copper settled near $3.71.

 

Gold and silver equities traded mostly slightly lower and ended with about 1% losses.

Oil fell along with the U.S. dollar index on this morning’s worse than expected manufacturing data that sent treasuries higher and the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P lower.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were J.C. Penney, Novartis, Tesla, Chesapeake, Exxon, and Lear.
