The Metals:
Gold climbed $14.70 to $1473.40 in early New York trade before it chopped back lower for most of the rest of trade, but it still ended with a gain of 0.56%. Silver rose to as high as $24.189 and ended with a gain of 0.68%.
Euro gold jumped to almost €1123, platinum gained $23 to $1498, and copper climbed a couple of cents to about $3.10.
Gold and silver equities saw slight losses for most of the morning, but they then edged back higher midday and ended near unchanged.

“The European Central Bank cut interest rates for the first time in 10 months on Thursday and held out the possibility of further policy action to support the recession-hit euro zone economy.
Responding to a drop in euro zone inflation well below its target level and rising unemployment, the ECB lowered its main rate by a quarter percentage point to a record low 0.50 percent.
ECB President Mario Draghi, promising to provide as much liquidity as euro zone banks need well into next year and to help smaller companies get access to credit, also indicated that some policymakers had pushed for a bigger cut.”

Oil rose along with the U.S. dollar index on the ECB’s rate cut and better than expected jobs data that also sent the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P higher. Treasuries found slight gains on the ECB’s and fed’s renewed dedication to keeping interest rates low.
Among the big names making news in the market today were GM, Intel, and Prudential.
