The Metals:
Gold dropped $8.45 to $1278.95 at about 4:30AM EST before it climbed to $1287.37 in the next couple of hours and then fell back off in morning New York trade, but it then edged back higher in the last few hours of the day and ended with a loss of just 0.3%. Silver slipped to $21.22 before it climbed back to $21.45 and then also fell back off, but it ended with a loss of just 0.42%.
Euro gold fell to about €957, platinum lost $10.80 to $1428.00, and copper remained at about $3.26.
Gold and silver equities fell roughly 2% in the first half hour trade and remained near that level for most of the morning, but they then climbed back higher in afternoon trade and ended near unchanged.
The Economy:
There were no major economic reports today, and there are none due out tomorrow, but there will be some fed members speaking. Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher, Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart, and Minneapolis Fed President Narayana Kocherlakota are all scheduled to speak tomorrow. Bernanke will speak on Wednesday, and Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser will speak on Thursday. Also on Thursday will be Janet Yellen’s nomination hearing before the Senate banking committee.
The Markets:

Oil rose on worries about stalled Iranian nuclear talks.
The U.S. dollar index fell as the euro rebounded from last week’s loss.
Treasuries saw slight losses as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P traded mostly higher in quiet trade.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Novartis, Apple, Shire, Transocean, Twitter, and Cooper.
