The Metals:
Gold climbed $5.40 to $1215.50 in Asia before it fell back to $1209.76 in London and then jumped to a new session high of $1218.62 at about 9AM EST, but it then drifted back lower into the close and ended with a gain of just 0.34%. Silver surged to as high as $20.11 and ended with a gain of 1.37%.
Euro gold remained near €884, platinum gained $18 to $1373, and copper fell a couple of cents to about $3.40.
Gold and silver equities traded mostly slightly higher and ended with about 1% gains.

Oil remained higher after the EIA reported that crude inventories fell 4.7 million barrels, gasoline inventories fell 614,000 barrels, and distillates fell 1.9 million barrels.
The U.S. dollar index fell as the euro climbed higher after an ECB member hinted at higher rates for the euro zone.
Treasuries waffled near unchanged along with the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P in quiet holiday trade.
Among the big names making news in the market Friday were GM, UPS, Boeing, Apple, and Twitter.
