Gold waffled between $1278.72 and $1272.45 in holiday thinned trade yesterday before it climbed to as high as $1294.07 in late Asian trade today and then pared back a bit in London, but it then rose to a new session high of $1296.98 in New York and ended with a gain of 1.35%. Silver surged to as high as $18.017 and ended with a gain of 1.36%.
Euro gold rose to about €1119, platinum gained $16 to $1279, and copper fell 4 cents to about $2.59.
Gold and silver equities rose about 4% by midday before they fell back off a bit in early afternoon trade, but they still ended with over 3% gains.

Oil fell nearly 5% on worries about a slowing global economy.
The U.S. dollar rose as the yen fell after China reported that its economy grew at a slightly less than expected 7.4% in 2014.
Treasuries found slight gains as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P traded mixed on uncertainty about central bank moves.
Among the big names making news in the market today were GM, Morgan Stanley, FXCM, Delta, Express, and Johnson & Johnson.
