The Metals:
Gold edged down to $1187.64 in Asia before it rebounded to $1199.35 at about 9:30AM EST and then chopped back lower into midday, but it still ended with a gain of 0.16%. Silver slipped to $16.87 in Asia, but it then rose to as high as $17.127 in New York and ended with a loss of just 0.18%.
Euro gold fell to about €1090, platinum gained $4 to $1142, and copper fell slightly to about $2.79.
Gold and silver equities opened up over 1% higher before they fell back off with the major indices for most of the rest of trade, but they ended with only a little over 1% losses.

Oil briefly pared early gains after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories rose 8.2 million barrels, gasoline inventories fell 2.0 million barrels, and distillates were unchanged, but it then rose to new session highs in late trade and ended nearly 4% higher on worries about increasing unrest in Yemen.

The U.S. dollar fell on poor durable goods data in the US and rising business morale in Europe that sent the euro higher.
Treasuries edged lower on profit taking.
The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P fell about 2% on worries about poor economic data and upcoming earnings reports.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Airbus, Ford, Kraft, and Heinz.
