The Metals:
Gold bumped up to $1204.68 in Asia before it fell back to $1185.87 by late morning in New York and then bounced back higher into early afternoon, but it then drifted back lower into the close and ended with a loss of 1.25%. Silver slipped to as low as $15.70 and ended with a loss of 1.37%.
Euro gold fell to about €1106, platinum lost $21 to $1126.50, and copper fell a few cents to about $2.67.
Gold and silver equities fell as much as 3% by midmorning and remained near that level for the rest of the day.

Oil briefly turned higher after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories rose 5.3 million barrels, gasoline inventories fell 2.1 million barrels, and distillates rose 400,000 barrels, but it then fell back off by the close and ended with a near 1% loss after traders looked deeper into the report.
The U.S. dollar erased overnight losses and treasuries fell on better than expected housing data that lifted the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P higher for most of the rest of trade.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Boeing, Gazprom, Tesco, Yahoo, Coke, and McDonald’s.
