The Metals:
Gold gained $25.42 to $1218.62 by early afternoon in New York before it chopped back lower in the last two and a half hours of trade, but it still ended with a gain of 1.81%. Silver surged to as high as $17.223 and ended with a gain of 3.45%.
Euro gold rose to about €1071, platinum gained $15.50 to $1143.50, and copper climbed a penny to about $2.93.
Gold and silver equities rose about 3% by early afternoon before they fell back off a bit in late trade, but they still ended with over 2% gains.

Oil initially added to early gains after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories fell 2.2 million barrels, gasoline inventories fell 1.1 million barrels, and distillates fell 2.5 million barrels, but it then fell back off by the close and ended with a minor loss as “data from the International Energy Agency showed that the world’s major oil producers continue to ramp up production”.
The U.S. dollar fell nearly 1% on poor economic data.
Treasuries ticked lower again by the close on continued concerns about the global bond market.

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P waffled near unchanged and ended mixed.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Facebook, Delta, Macy’s, GM, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Danaher.
