The Metals:

 

Gold gained $11.48 to $1168.78 at about 8AM EST before it chopped back lower in morning New York trade, but it still ended with a gain of 0.44%.  Silver rose to as high as $16.077 and ended with a gain of 0.06%.

 

Euro gold rose to about €1023, platinum gained $16 to $993, and copper climbed slightly to about $2.42.

 

Gold and silver equities saw slight gains at the open, but they then fell back off for most of the rest of the day and ended with about 3% losses.

There were no major economic reports today.  Tomorrow brings the Treasury Budget for September expected at $95 billion.

Oil fell over 5% “on a report that OPEC continued to boost crude production despite a persistent glut.”

 

The U.S. dollar index traded mostly slightly lower and treasuries climbed higher as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P held near unchanged ahead of this week’s earnings reports.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were Kohl’s, Dell, and AB InBev.
