The Metals:
Gold edged up to $1169.35 in London before it fell back to $1163.05 at about 9:30 AM EST and then shot up to $1171.84 in the next hour of trade, but it then drifted back lower into the close and ended with a loss of 0.09%. Silver rose to as high as $15.919 before it also fell back off, but it still ended with a gain of 0.83%.
Euro gold rose to about €1050, platinum gained $7 to $1008, and copper climbed a couple of cents to about $2.38.
Gold and silver equities rose about 2% in the first hour of trade and remained near that level for the rest of the day.

Oil ended with a slight gain as the market rebounded from yesterday’s inventory driven loss.
The U.S. dollar index shot higher as the euro dropped about 2% “after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi gave a crowd-pleasing performance at his policy address in Malta, leaving investors in little doubt he’s ready to deploy more monetary stimulus to boost the flagging economy.”
Treasuries held near unchanged while the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P rose over 1.5% on expectations for more quantitative easing from the ECB.
Among the big names making news in the market today were GM, Caterpillar, Credit Suisse, AmEx, Valeant, and CIT.
