The Metals:
Gold gained $10.36 to $1084.96 at about 9AM EST before it fell back to $1069.70 in the next couple of hours of trade and then bounced back higher into early afternoon, but it still ended with a loss of 0.18%. Silver rose to as high as $14.353 and ended with a loss of 0.07%.
Euro gold fell to about €973, platinum gained $13 to $854, and copper climbed a couple of cents to about $2.07.
Gold and silver equities rose over 3% at the open before they fell back off in late morning trade, but they still ended with about 1.5% gains.

Oil turned lower after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories fell 3.6 million barrels, gasoline inventories rose 800,000 barrels, and distillates rose 5 million barrels.
The U.S. dollar index fell markedly as the euro rose after “Ewald Nowotny, a member of the European Central Bank’s governing council, defended last week’s ECB decision to adopt a smaller expansion of its monetary stimulus than many investors had expected.”
Treasuries saw decent gains as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P dropped with oil on economic uncertainty.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Bed Bath, Nordstrom, Volkswagen, Dow chemical and DuPont, Pep Boys, Accor Wynn, and Yahoo.
