The Metals:

 

Gold gained $4.74 to $1160.44 in London before it dropped down to $1145.24 after the release of this morning’s jobs data, but it then stormed back higher into the close and ended with a gain of 1.55%.  Silver surged to as high as $15.043 and ended with a gain of 1.21%.

 

Euro gold rose above €1052, platinum gained $6 to $909, and copper fell 4 cents to about $2.09.

 

Gold and silver equities fell nearly 4% in the first 15 minutes of trade, but they then rallied back higher for most of the rest of the day and ended with about 5% gains.

The BLS net birth/death adjustment subtracted 233,000 payrolls from January’s data.  Private Payrolls rose 158,000.

 

The Markets:

Oil fell almost 3% and the U.S. dollar index rose along with treasuries on mixed jobs data.

 

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P fell on poor earnings reports.

 

Among the big names making news in the market Friday were Volkswagen, Hess, LinkedIn, and Tyson Foods.
