The Metals:
Gold gained $12.52 to $1278.92 by a little after 8AM EST before it pared its gains into midday, but it then bounced back higher in afternoon trade and ended with a gain of 0.89%. Silver rose to as high as $17.562 and ended with a gain of 1.66%.
Euro gold rose to about €1119, platinum gained $12 to $1061, and copper climbed slightly to about $2.11.
Gold and silver equities jumped over 4% higher at the open before they fell to see slight losses in late morning trade, but they then climbed back higher into the close and ended with about 3% gains on the day.

Oil gained 3.5% after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories fell 3.4 million barrels, gasoline inventories fell 1.2 million barrels, and distillates fell 1.6 million barrels.
The U.S. dollar index fell and treasuries rose as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P dropped about 1% on poor earnings reports.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Gap, Staples, Office Depot, Disney, Macy’s, Boeing, and Apple.
