The Metals:

 

Gold waffled near unchanged in Asia and London before it jumped $17.84 to $1355.74 after the release of this morning’s disappointing economic data, but it then dove down to $1333.51 in early afternoon New York trade and ended with a loss of 0.25%.  Silver slipped to as low as $19.674 and ended with a loss of 1.3%.

 

Euro gold fell to about €1196, platinum lost $15.50 to $1119.50, and coper fell 5 cents to about $2.14.

 

Gold and silver equities rose roughly 3% at the open, but they then fell back off for most of the rest of trade and ended with modest losses.

Oil briefly pared early gains on news of rising rig counts for the seventh week in a row.

 

The U.S. dollar index fell and treasuries rose on poor economic data that held the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P near unchanged.
