The Metals:
Gold gained $12.88 to $1185.88 in early afternoon New York trade before it drifted back lower into the close, but it still ended with a gain of 0.81%. Silver surged to as high as $16.69 and ended with a gain of 0.55%.
Euro gold rose to about €1119, platinum gained $9 to $975, and copper remained at about $2.54.
Gold and silver equities rose roughly 2% by late morning before they fell back off in afternoon trade, but they still ended with modest gains on the day.

Oil closed almost 4% lower on concerns over rising Iraqi exports and US output.
The U.S. dollar index fell and treasuries rose as the Dow and S&P dropped on interest rate uncertainty.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Alibaba, Bank of America, Toyota, Mars and VCA, Volkswagen, Fiat Chrysler, and McDonald's.
