The Metals:
Gold gained $9.50 to $1242.10 in late morning New York trade before it drifted back lower in afternoon trade, but it still ended with a gain of 0.54%. Silver rose to as high as $18.126 and ended with a gain of 0.61%.
Euro gold fell to about €1161, platinum gained $3.50 to $1009, and copper fell 3 cents to about $2.74.
Gold and silver equities rose roughly 2% in the first half hour of trade and remained near that level for the rest of the day.
