The Metals:

 

Gold gained $5.50 to $1254.60 in London before it fell back to $1247.90 in midmorning New York trade, but it then bounced back higher into the close and ended with a gain of 0.09%.  Silver rose to as high as $16.859 and ended with a gain of 0.84%.

 

Euro gold fell to about €1098, platinum gained $2 to $920, and copper climbed a penny to about $2.68.

 

Gold and silver equities waffled near unchanged and ended mixed.

The Markets:

 

Oil gained 1% after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories fell 100,000 barrels, gasoline inventories fell 900,000 barrels, and distillates fell 200,000 barrels.

 

The U.S. dollar index dropped as the euro continued higher on the outlook for tighter monetary policy in Europe.

 

Treasuries fell as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P bounced back from yesterday’s losses.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were Deutsche Bank, Chesapeake Energy, and Blue Apron.
