The Metals:
Gold gained $8.80 to $1289.10 just after 8:30AM EST before it dropped back to $1277.00 in midafternoon trade, but then edged back higher in the last hour of the day and ended with a loss of just 0.13%. Silver rose to as high as $17.197 and ended with a loss of 0.24%.
Euro gold fell to about €1084, platinum gained $7 to $930, and copper dropped a couple of cents to about $3.05.
Gold and silver equities waffled near unchanged and ended mixed.
The Economy:
U.S. business inventories unchanged in September Reuters
U.S. consumer prices edge up; retail sales unexpectedly increase Reuters
Empire State index retreats in November from three-year high MarketWatch
Tomorrow brings Initial Jobless Claims, the Philadelphia Fed, Import and Export Prices, Industrial Production, and the Housing Market Index.
The Markets:
Oil fell almost 1% after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories rose 1.9 million barrels, gasoline inventories rose 900,000 barrels, and distillates fell 800,000 barrels.
The U.S. dollar index pared early losses but still ended lower while treasuries rose as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P dropped on concerns about slowing global growth.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Acorda, Monsanto, Tencent, Airbus, and Target.
