Gold gained $6.30 to $1248.50 by midday in New York before it chopped back lower into the close, but it still ended with a gain of 0.39%. Silver rose to as high as $15.989 and ended with a gain of 0.89%.
Euro gold rose above €1068, platinum gained $12 to $839, and copper climbed 3 cents to about $2.77.
Gold and silver equities rose roughly 1% by late morning before they drifted back lower, but they still ended with modest gains.
