The Metals:
Gold gained $16.70 to $1239.50 just after 8AM EST before it chopped back lower in New York, but it still ended with a gain of 0.6%. Silver rose to as high as $14.806 and ended with a gain of 1.1%.
Euro gold rose above €1072, platinum gained $11.50 to $830, and copper dropped 2 cents to about $2.75.
Gold and silver equities jumped about 3% higher at the open before they fell back off into late morning, but they still ended roughly 1% higher on the day.

The Markets:
Oil fell over 4% and the U.S. dollar index edged lower while treasuries rose on worries about a global slowdown that sent the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P markedly lower at times, but stocks did end well off their lows.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Johnson & Johnson, Monsanto, Harley-Davidson, Caterpillar, 3M, and McDonald’s.
