Last Friday night the lovely Miss Puddy accompanied me on our usual Friday night outing to the movies. Even though we were out of town we managed to make our weekly trip to the cinema. We chose Ben Stein’s new movie, “Expelled”. In it Mr. Stein talks of the politically correct sanitizing of the “Intelligent Design” theory over Darwinism.
While I will not go into my personal views of Darwinism I will state that I feel its main shortcomings are: Where did life itself originate? Where is the fossil record of the evolutionary development? ID or intelligent design is an alternate theory that covers everything from creationism to alien intervention.
In the movie Mr. Stein lists example after example where grants, positions, tenure and all manner of heavy handed means were employed against those who even dared to mention the words, “intelligent design” (heaven help them if they uttered, “creationism”). Careers were ruined and cut short by the mere mention of the phrase. Mr. Stein states that the government has adopted Darwinism as its state theology and those who contest it in any way are labeled heretics and subject to a modern day inquisition by the state.
Even in our little part of the US we have noticed prominent Darwinism in the establishment of an “old chimps home” lavishly funded by the feds. The capital expenditure per chimpanzee is almost $100,000 and the yearly upkeep on each is staggering. I would not be surprised if they spend less on humans in state sponsored old folk’s homes.
At any rate we talked after the movie and it seems that Mr. Stein missed something. When Aaron Russo made his film, “Freedom to Fascism” he was interested in tax protesters and ended up looking into the federal reserve. The same could have been done by Mr. Stein. How did the federal government obtain all this power? How did they gain control over the press, the colleges, the academic research grants, the schools and reach down into our everyday lives with their numerous tentacles?
Senator Vitter sent his aid for this part of the state to talk to our local Lion’s club this week. I asked him how many staffers the Senator had on his payroll. He said he was not sure but thought it was around 40 or 50 people. Someone mentioned that Senator Kennedy had over 100 staffers. I mentioned that before WWII the average congressman had ONE secretary on staff and the average senator had three. It seems that our congressmen spend all day passing laws and regulations and then hire thousands of staffers to help us fight the bureaucracy that they themselves created! The majority of the staffers work in the congressmen’s constituent services section.
How is it that the federal government has reached down to the individual taxpayer even past the state and local governments themselves? Well now we have come to the heart of the matter. Without the power to create money (debt) from thin air the federal government could never have grown to the size it has presently become. Without the federal reserve servicing the treasury and extending it limitless credit the federal government would have had to have lived within its means as was done before the creation of the federal reserve (with a few exceptions). At any rate it could have never grown to its present size reaching down into all of our lives without its quiet little private benefactor.
So the next time you hear someone complaining about the growing power, size and reach of the federal government remind them it is all possible because of the federal reserve. To kill the beast, you must strike at the heart. The last one to do so was President Jackson. During his term as president he not only killed the 2nd National Bank but he also paid off the national debt completely. Late in his life he said it was his proudest accomplishment. Just imagine what life would be like without the IRS to drain away your wealth and without the federal reserve to drain away your children’s and grandchildren’s wealth. Imagine a life with only a small constitutionally authorized government that didn’t have both hands in your pockets and controlled what could and could not be taught.
It was a good movie Ben, but on our present course I am afraid that government heavy handedness will only get worse as the government’s hands only get bigger. It is a start however. We must educate ourselves and each other. Bismarck started public schools to make good little German citizens. Public schools do the same in this country. For a real education you must study and educate yourself. To remain ignorant is treason to your country and a betrayal to the men and ideas that this great experiment called the United States were founded upon. Power to the people!
